NEON FOR SPRING

Hi Deborah,
I’m 52 and just bought a cute yellow neon clutch for spring. My sister says I look silly and that neon is passé.
What do you think? ……. Susan
Hi Susan, You are right that neon is in style, but I’d have to agree with your sister that it is not the most flattering look for a gal over 40. Why? …
Read more about neon fashion
First of all, neon is very bright, and if it’s neon patent leather, it’s electrifying. That much contrast against mature skin and hair can look rather harsh, and frankly, tacky.
You may see movie stars wearing a neon color head to toe, but they have on a ton of make-up and they want to stand out on the red carpet. For the average woman, that much neon is too loud to be flattering.
The easiest way for anyone to wear neon is as an accent.  For example, try a cute, casual jacket with  sporty neon trim or a pair of  shoes with some small neon detail. Remember that neon communicates a casual, fun vibe. That’s why it is so popular as a color for athletic wear. It’s not a color you’d wear to work if you wanted to communicate authority or credibility.
Susan, if you really want a neon bag you’d be better off with something like this yellow neon tote. It has a sportier feel than the formal clutch.
This tote is also rimmed in black to tone down the neon. It’s well suited to casual occasions like a trip to the beach, or the book club.

Real Women Wear Cheap and Expensive Lip Gloss

Since I travel a lot I'm always looking for ways to strike up a conversation with other Fashionistas, to share with you as inspiration.

best pink lip glossComparing drugstore lip gloss to her expensive mall purchase. Can you guess the winner?

So, while sitting in Memphis last week, I had the delightful opportunity to meet the lovely, dynamic, and proud to be called a fashionista, Lauren Jones.

While waiting to board, it was hard for me to miss Lauren, in her bright pink shirt, dramatically waiving around 2 lip glosses, while enthusiastically explaining to her travel partner  why the $8.00 Neutrogena version was actually better than the $25.50  Christian Dior one, although it did have gorgeous packaging, that she just had to splurge on!

How to Tie a Square Scarf

 Chic Accent Square Scarf accent
There's a great tutorial I found on How to Try a Square scarf, here.   Why not try it out this week?

Square Scarf   There are a lot of long scarves out there but I would like to know how to tie a square scarf so it looks chic. Help! Thanks, Celine W. While we all know how to tie a turkey leg together, when it comes to tying a scarf that can be a different matter! I was at the mall recently and spotted this beautiful over 40 gal!  This square scarf really added some style to a simple top and leather skirt.

Best Watch to Wear this Summer

I love accessories, and timepieces are a classic way to accessorize, whether it's a sporty, an elegant, or a casual timepiece.

Michael Kors Paris Limited Edition Runway WatchOn October 15th, Michael Kors will release his Michael Kors Paris Limited Edition Runway Watch for Fall/Winter 2012. This watch, inspired by The City of Light, is the second in a series of destination-inspired watches released by Michael Kors.

Ooh, la, la! The rose gold tone lends a touch of femininity to this sporty, masculine watch. A 2.5mm diamond embellishes the face of the watch. If you love the face, the case-back is equally impressive. It displays the Parisian skyline with the Eiffel Tower, an icon of The City of Lights, as its primary focus. The watch is presented in a collector's edition box in a soft, luxe brown.

Michael Kors Polyvore

This classic timepiece would look just as good accessorizing a casual outfit as it would a dressy one.

I'd pair the watch with the outfit below for an afternoon stool through the streets of Paris. A quick stop at a Parisian café for a café au lait would be the perfect way to take a much needed break from all the walking.

What are you going to wear on a Night Out with the girl

As the old saying goes…”Women dress for other women”…so why not look fab when you are going out with your girlfriends to celebrate a birthday or enjoy a good chat and a glass of wine? Here’s what to wear:

Dark Stretch Jeans

Jag jean with boot cut

Straight-jeans

This are a favorite choice with women of all shapes and sizes. Be sure your jeans have simple lines and pockets hit you at a good spot. Don’t do pocket flaps if you have a large behind, or a lot of decoration. A  little flair is usually the most flattering. You can do straight legged if you are thin and can pull it off, or if you want to tuck in.

Fab Boots, Tucked In or Out

If you want comfort these flat boots are great. Jeans can get tucked in or out.

Or, how about these short boots to go under a boot cut jean or pant? These tall, Joan and David boots are fun too, and are pretty comfy since they are suede!

Colorful Jacket

Try a colorful Jacket: You could do any color… yellow, blue, green, hot pink…what ever looks best on you.

I like the idea of a 3/4 length sleeve, worn open with a figure flattering t-shirt underneath.
